New Space jobs vs Old Space jobs?

Don't worry we've got your back this week. The best space jobs are here. Again.

Hello everyone,

This week is quite fun I have to admit.

On one hand, we have the story of a newspace startup which has gone from not existing to having hardware in orbit in ~3 years. (This is crazy if you think about it for a minute)

And then we have the old space story: Airbus, Thales and Leonardo are merging their space divisions to create a massive European space dinosaur.

Please do build your own opinion, I have mine… time will prove me wrong (or most likely not 😅🤦‍♂️)

But what doesn’t change and only improves are the jobs! This week’s got a few really good openings.

🚀 Solving the "Power Problem" with Revolv Space

This week on the podcast, I spoke with Aleksander Fiuk, co-founder and COO of Revolv Space.

They are a perfect example of a startup succeeding by focusing on a problem everyone has but few have solved: power. As satellites get more advanced, they're needing more and more power. Aleksander and his team are building SARA to help satellites maximise their power generation. That and more.

We cover the whole startup journey:

  • Why customer validation before building tech is crucial.

  • The challenges of building a team and his role as COO.

  • The reality of fundraising and navigating the European space landscape.

It's a great conversation about what it really takes to build a hardware startup in Europe. And it’s impressive that they managed to focus on getting clients from the start; even while developing their technology.

Quite a masterclass for any of you thinking about starting a company one day. It’s hard… but possible!

💰 So… Will a New European Giant Compete with SpaceX?

You might have seen loads of clickbait headlines claiming that Europe is about to finally? compete with SpaceX…

Don’t get your hopes up too early as that’s not happening anytime soon. No way Jose.

Not that I wouldn’t like that but this merger won’t help them achieve that. And I don’t think is the idea. Competing with Falcon 9 and Starlink is now virtually impossible in Europe. And it will only get more difficult as Blue Origin, RocketLab and co develop more reusable vehicles and other megaconstellations (like Kuiper).

I think this is more about creating a massive prime contractor in Europe that will (for good or for bad, depending on where you’re sitting…) will get pretty much any large public contract/funding opportunity in Europe. Basically it will probably help them become the default supplier/contractor for ESA, EUSPA and Europe.

But of course the situation isn’t as simple as to be summarised in three short paragraphs and it would give time to discuss it over a few beers… so if interested just let me know!

Any thoughts on the merger?

That’s it for the week. Let me know what you think of today’s newsletter.
