ESA will soon get a big funding boost

ESA's Ministerial happening now and that will probably bring a lot of jobs!

Hello,

This week is ESA Ministerial week… let’s see how much funding ESA gets. The initial proposal is quite large so let’s see what each of the Member States have to say.

About the jobs: quite an interesting mix this week. Didn’t include them all here so worth checking the job board for the full list.

Let’s go!

Check out some of the best roles of the week…

  • Geospatial Software Engineer @ Planet (Austria)

👉 Build geospatial pipelines for satellite imagery at scale.

  • Intern in the Communication Department @ ESA (Netherlands)

👉 Yet another nice non technical internship opportunity at ESA! Quickkkkkkkkk

  • Thermal Engineer - Europe @ Lunar Outpost (Luxembourg)

👉 Help build the future of thermal control and energy storage systems for rovers, habitats, landers, satellites, and beyond.

  • Remote Sensing and Earth Observation Specialist @ PandionAI (Sweden)

👉 Ship customer ready EO products fast: multispectral/SAR workflows, Copernicus/Planet/Maxar, plus ML for detection and change analysis.

  • Astronomer @ ESO (Germany)

👉 Remember that not everything is engineering in the space industry. Science is important!

  • Aerospace Software Engineer @ Involve Space (Italy)

👉 Help build the software to fly and control stratospheric balloons. You won’t reach space but just by a tiny tiny bit.

There are plenty of other jobs in the job board so be sure to check it out. Or else you might miss out…

We’ve got ESA funding…

Yesterday ESA proposed a new budget for the next three years. The new budget jumps to €22B (up from €16.9B), with the biggest funding increase going to Human/Robotic Exploration and Space Transportation (both getting a little over €1B more).

The interesting move here (apart from the budget increase) is the ERS programme (European Resilience from Space) which aims to get €1.35B to develop national/european assets for secure communications, navigation, surveillance… and so on. A bit of a step towards defense by ESA. But as space is becoming more and more militarised, some can argue it’s inevitable.

On the commercial side: the Commercialisation and Technology areas see the biggest percentage jumps (~137% and ~84%), which should translate into more contracts and support for startups and faster tech transfer… Let’s hope! Because this should also be one of the (if not THE) most important priorities.

An important thing is that these numbers aren’t final until the Member States subscribe, and ERS will stay open longer to bring defence ministries on board.
